Singapore: PepsiCo Inc is returning to Vietnam after a three-year hiatus to launch a local Pepsi brand in the Southeast Asian country, as the U.S. soda and snacks company searches for new growth opportunities. PepsiCo’s global business development team is working on a global commercial strategy and plans to expand its portfolio to a group of fast-growing countries, including Vietnam, according to Bloomberg data. PepsiCo Chief Executive Officer Ramon Laguarta in a statement on Tuesday said the company will return to Vietnam after a three-year hiatus. Singapore is one of the most expensive locations for making beer in the world, making it difficult to make money in the country, said Justin Tan, analyst at Argyle Group. But it could still be an attractive market. “Vietnam will take the biggest hit,” Tan said. PepsiCo’s food unit sold 50 percent more beverages in the region in 2014, but volume still lagged well behind its beer business. It makes Corona and Budweiser in the country. “It’s about new growth in new areas. There are some large, fast-growing markets with a lot of opportunities in the Pacific,” said Lee Black, a strategy and corporate development director at PepsiCo. “There’s enough demand to go around.” He declined to give specifics, but said the company will make investments in key markets to maximize profitability. The beverage giant’s return to Vietnam follows the Coca-Cola Co’s debut in the country last year, which was quickly followed by Pepsi’s first-ever foray in the market. The brands entered a market that was traditionally dominated by local players in the early 2000s, when the U.S. drink maker started buying up many local companies. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo’s biggest rival in Vietnam, led the charge into the country, through a string of mergers and acquisitions. Coca-Cola is now Vietnam’s largest beverage company, with a 35 percent market share, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, overtaking Pepsi’s 26 percent.
